Air Travel – It Ain’t What It Used To Be

Last week I flew to California. Once again, I enjoyed the feeling of over a hundred people squashed into a space smaller than that of the average city bus. Air travel. What a delight.

Having mentioned what air travel was like in the past, I thought I’d post a few pictures to emphasize what was and what we’ve lost. Air travel, 1930s style.

The dining area of the Boeing B-314 flying boat:

Airships were even more luxurious, rivaling the ocean liners of the day. Having seen what we’ve lost in air travel, why do we put up with what we have today?

  1. great pictures of old air travel. I remember traveling by air and there was a smoking and non-smoking section, a hot meal, magazines, and a little toy bag for the kids. I’m glad they did away with the smoking section. And now, yes, one feels like a lemming being directed to the nearest cliff. South American air travel feels much more like a bit of luxury. If I could and get where I needed to go, I would choose the train. As a child, I traveled from whitefish, MT to Boston on a train. It was a great adventure.

    1. Yes! I remember all those things about flying, too. Still not like in the ’30s or ’50s, but it made flying much more fun. I’d love to take a train trip. Never been on one. It’s on my bucket list.
